First published in 1950 and revised over time, it is Italy's bestselling culinary "bible," Il Cucchiaio d'argento.  To put it together, a team of chefs from Domus magazine traveled across Italy collecting authentic recipes from every region.  Then, 50 years later the next great undertaking of translating it into English began with painstaking conversion of measurements and methods.  Finally in 2005 it was released in English with 1263 color photos, over  2,000 recipes in beautifully laid out text complete with two ribbon markers. Its chapters make every menu stop from sauces and antipasti through cheese dishes and sweets, with many standout dishes like Genoese Pesto Minestrone, Eggplant and Ricotta Lasagna, Pork Shoulder with Prunes, and Chocolate and Pear Tart; the book also includes a number of "eccentricities," like sections on patty shells and bean sprouts. Meant to be inclusive, the book also offers a wide range of non-Italian, mostly French recipes, supplemented by a few "exotic" and other non-traditional entries like eel and wild boar.  It is big and it is beautiful.
